How to Get Motivated: Maybe You’re Not Asking the Right Question

I think we all struggle with this idea of motivation. But in reality, maybe motivation is not what we really struggle with. Motivation is typically extrinsic – something or someone is pushing us. Maybe your doctor is motivating you to get healthy. Or maybe it’s society – you’re supposed to look a certain way.

If you are consistently struggling with motivation, maybe you aren’t struggling with motivation at all. Maybe you are struggling with inspiration.

Inspiration is the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something. Maybe you’re not inspired by what’s in front of you.

So how do you get inspired? Here are four tips to help you get inspired:

1. Ask the right questions. Get super clear on what you want and what your vision is. If you are having trouble pulling this out, please know that you have the answers inside of you. You may need some help getting them out. If you do, my recommendation is to go talk to either a good friend/family member or even a therapist. Therapists are great at pulling information out. Life coaches and business coaches are also great at this.

2. Create playtime. Between all of the commitments that we have, we never leave space for play. Play is arguably the single most important thing we can do to relax and recharge. When I say play, I specifically mean things that let your brain relax, but still stay active. For me, play means taking a walk, gardening, taking an art class or reading a book. Keep a list of these things in your phone so when you are feeling uninspired, you have a cheat sheet.

3. Meditation. Meditation is scientifically proven to decrease activity in the default mode network – which basically equates to monkey mind. Monkey mind, or mind wandering, is associated with being less happy and worry so the goal is to dial it down. Meditation is one way to do that. 4. Be with the right people. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals, people who are trying to be better. A lot of times we don't realize the effect that other people have on us, but by going and surrounding yourself with like-minded people you’re going to naturally feel more inspired.
